...A bipartisan filibuster, led by unified Republicans and joined by four Democrats and one independent, proved there isn't enough support to back Mr. Obama's preferred option to extend income tax cuts for couples making less than $250,000 and tax increases for those making more than that...

The negotiators seem to be headed toward an agreement that would extend all the 2001 and 2003 income tax cuts temporarily. Still to be decided was what sweeteners Democrats would secure to make swallowing the tax cuts more palatable. Possible options included extended unemployment benefits....

Peter Hannaford will lead the Humboldt Republican Party, having been elected chairman of its central committee for 2011-12 at its organizational meeting Thursday.

Hannaford, who was closely associated with the late President Ronald Reagan for a number of years, returned to California and settled in Eureka in 2006 after 22 years in Washington, D.C. Other officers are Joy Finley, Eureka, first vice chairman; David Crane, Fortuna, second vice chairman; Verona ´Vee¡ Sorenson, Arcata, secretary; and Kathy Rodriguez, McKinleyville, treasurer.

In addition to the officers, County Elections Chief Carolyn Crnich conducted the swearing-in ceremony of members Mark Erdmann, Eureka; Jean Giannini, Fortuna; Sharon Pierson, Eureka; Sam Trumbull, Arcata; Parke Bostrom, Eureka; Tim Trutna, Eureka; and Kathy Rodriguez, McKinleyville, alternate for ex officio member Loren Hanks.

Adding insult to injury for their party, at least 13 Democratic state lawmakers have joined the Republican ranks since Election Day -- deepening GOP gains and in one case handing the party the state House majority.
Democrats in five states have switched parties since Nov. 2, citing concerns about the economy and the political leanings of their constituents. The defections are a troubling sign for state Democratic operations clinging to life following their election drubbing. Though Republicans' congressional gains drew more attention, the party picked up more than 675 seats at the state level last month and in some cases took over entire state capitals.

San Francisco is New Capital of California
The City of San Francisco and its suburbs are considered unusually left wing when compared to the rest of California, let alone when compared to the rest of the country. Yet, as a result of the recent election the state electorate apparently decided to be governed in its top leadership almost exclusively by San Franciscans.
